Top 10 Spiritual Movies + Are these your favourite films?

Blog, Guest Post 10 61037

There are many times in our lives when we need to just chillax (chill/relax) and my all time favorite past time is settling down and watching a fantastic movie that allows me to think, feel, celebrate and yes; even contemplate my navel from time to time.

The following list is my favorite Top 10 Spiritual Movies.

Some you may have seen already and others may be just what you need in your life right now.

So TA-DA! my favourite Top 10 Spiritual Movies are as follows:

1. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

-official limited edition movie trailer.

THE movie of all spiritual movies, it allowed us all to give ourselves permission to lay on our backs, staring up at the night sky and wave hello to whoever (or indeed whatever) was maybe waving back at us.. Hands up who wanted to be right along side Richard Dreyfus character as he stepped into that Spaceship? (love this so much I have 2 copies unless one gets damaged)

2. Out on a Limb.- Shirley Maclaine (mini-series 1987)

-excerpt of Out on a Limb

I remember sitting with my Mum in the late eighties watching the mini-series video of this and being blown away with the amazing information, energy and adventure that Shirley takes us on, in revealing her own Spiritual journey. I have been impatiently  waiting for it to become available on DVD where I will buy two copies … YES.. it is that brilliant…..
nb: I SWORE I was going to marry John Heard after seeing this movie *love sick sigh*

3. The Abyss (1989)

One of James Cameron’s finest. The message, music and movie is brilliantly filmed and the characters brilliantly flawed. (and yes I have two copies of this)

4. Powder (1995)

Powder is such an incredible film! Sean Patrick Flannery is wonderful as ‘Powder’, and the spiritual messages throughout this movie brings tears to your eyes and joy to your heart.

5. Phenomenon (1996)

John Travolta is wonderful as “George O’Malley” a humble guy from a small town that has something extraordinary happen to him on the night of his 37th birthday. Beautifully filmed, with spiritual messages weaved throughout the entire story.. a must have in any spiritual movie collection.

6. City of Angels (1998)

Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage bring this movie to life. I have a very special link to this movie (read the story here). Incredibly heart wrenching and poignant.

7. Instinct (1999) (excerpt)

Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding Jr face off in this brilliant film based loosely on Daniel Quinn’s wonderful book “Ishmael”. This film will have you questioning what is real and what is an illusion. Incredible!!

8. The Secret/What the Bleep (2006)

I know I know.. these are both number 8.. thing is they are both so similar with one based on the Aussie written book and the other based on the American version of the Aussie written book. If you have only seen one, do yourself a favor and watch them both.  What the Bleep has an extraordinary scene explaining the effects on our emotions with water.

9. The Way (2011)

One of my new favorite Spiritual Movies. Written, Produced and Directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his own Father Martin Sheen. The scenery, characters and message of this film is just beautiful. I watched this film twice back to back and encourage all who are on their own ‘journey’ to take time out of their busy lives to sit still and be moved by this film.

10. Cloud Atlas (2012) – release date October 26th, 2012

Based on the 2004 novel by British writer David Mitchell. Starring Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and many many more talented actors. Altho long, it’s visually stunning with a true A-HA moment right at the end.. Grab yourself a bean bag.. and maybe two bowls of popcorn.. But don’t miss out on watching this.

So there you go.. my favorite Top 10 Spiritual Movies. What do you think?

  • Have I missed one of your favorites?
  • Is there one film you think I would love that I have not listed above?
